I switched to photography from painting around 2003 as it seemed a more direct way to represent the world. However, directly taking photographs of things also seemed problematic to me. As such I took a step back from the straight-forward image and explored visual representation itself as a subject. I did this in several ways - by photographing photographs or here by placing things inside the frame of “high art”. With this device I attempted to examine the tension between reality and fine art images. I conceive of this as an extension of the great modernist project of artists like Courbet and Manet who sought to paint modern life rather than the histrionic narratives expected of artists at the turn of the last century. |
